On Page SEO – Meta Description

In our previous video we looked at the Page Title Element. The next Metatag that we need to look at is the Meta Description.

The Meta Description describes the content of a particular page, but in a little more detail & is used by the search engines to provide a summary of that page in the listings. Again, if you go to Google & do a search you will see the Meta Description appears on the 2nd & 3rd lines of each result in plain text.

How to create your Meta Description

You should use between 20 – 30 words, but do not use more than 180 characters in total including spaces. It should read naturally & be customised  to the particular page that you are working on.

You need to create the Meta Description as follows

<meta name=”description” content=”Enter your summary here. Make it read naturally & customize it to the particular page that you are working on. No more than 30 words maximum.”>

On Page SEO – Page Title Element

Following on from our previous video where we looked at On Page Factors vs Off Page Factors, in this video we show you how to create the html for the Page Title Element.

The html is as follows:

<title>Enter your chosen Title Keywords here – make them read naturally</title>

On Page SEO Tip – Create Unique Page Title Elements for Every Page

For better On page SEO you should create relevant Page Title Elements for each page of your website & make them relevant to that page.

For example, if you have a website related to cleaning services & you offer domestic & commercial cleaning services, the Title for the domestic cleaning services page should be different from the commercial cleaning services page.

You should make your Page Title Element up to a maximum of 70-80 characters (around 7 to 10 words) & make them readable & understandable. Don´t include any unnecessary jargon or filling in words & make sure they identify exactly what you do.

On Page SEO Tip – Strongest Keyword First

Another great Tip is to use your strongest keywords as the first keyword in your Page Title Element. Going back to the previous example, for the page relating to domestic cleaning make sure that “domestic cleaning” is included first.

On Page Factors vs Off Page Factors

What are On Page Factors?

When we talk about On Page Factors what we are really referring to are things that you have a great deal of control over. These are things like your choice of keywords, page names, the metatags (basically the html code that is included in your website & which allows Google to determine how to categorise your website.

Why should you take time to consider On Page Factors?

In a nutshell on page factors are something which you have a high degree of control over so it is worth the time & effort to get them right. It´s like at school where your end of year grade consists of project work as well as the end of year exam. You would put in as much effort to get a good grade in the project so that you don´t depend so much on the exam result when you might freeze on the day.

How to get started with your On Page Factors

One of the most important aspects of On Page Factors are your use of Metatags. In this video we have a look at the Page Title Element & we explain why this is absolutely fundamental to your search engine position.

SEO vs Pay per Click – Cost vs Results

Previously we looked at the keyword competition & now we need to consider SEO vs pay per click to see which delivers the best value for money in lower competition keywords. In the video I show you how to do this in 3 easy steps.

SEO vs Pay per Click step 1- measure the costs

In the first instance we need to understand how much our keywords would cost if we were to go down the pay per click route.

SEO vs Pay per Click step 2- check the competition

Then we can see how much competition there is in the pay per click listings for that keyword.

SEO vs Pay per Click step 3 – summarise the results

All we need to do then is to summarise the results & compare them in a spreadsheet.

It is worth pointing out that in the video I have performed a “broad” search in the Google keyword tool. This will give a higher result than if you perform an “exact” search. If you want to consider the best & worst cases you can include the traffic for exact searches on your spreadsheet too but you will usually find that you will get a favourable comparison for seo vs pay per click.

In the next video we look at comparing the costs & benefits of seo vs pay per click.

How to find out who is your keyword competition

Once you understand who is your keyword competition this makes it easy to know which keywords to target.

In our previous video we looked at how to check the page rank of our keyword competition. At this point we need to analyze our keyword compeition so if you are comfortable using a spreadsheet then that is easiest, but if you like you can just as easily do it with good old pen & pencil.

Analyze the Keyword Competition

For the moment try with a dozen or so keywords.

Once we have completed this task we will have an average score per keyword which allows you to havce a clear, concise understanding of your keyword competition.

Next steps once you have performed your keyword competition

Now that you know your keyword competition in the next video we can estimate how much this traffic would cost us if we were to use Pay per Click.
