Boost your email subscriber list using this proven process
Building an email list is one of the most important things you can do for your online business.
If you boost email list numbers, you will get a direct line to your customers, one which you can use to provide value to your customers, and yes, pitch your products and services when you’ve achieved their trust.
But it is not just enough to collect emails.
Even though 72% of internet users prefer email to other types of communication, 69% of converting emails are from customers that trust your brand. Spamming might have worked some years ago but it just won’t fly anymore. So how do you build a healthy email list from scratch?
Here are 5 tips that might help boost email list growth.
1. Identify a pressing need in your niche
The secret in building trust with your target audience is identifying something that really bothers them, or a problem they need to solve and then creating content that solves that need
The average person typically runs to Google to search for solutions and if you do some research, you will know which keywords to target in order to reach this audience.
The key is to present your information in an easy to digest format, such as a checklist, cheat sheet, or easy to follow instructions or process.
Checklists are the best for such content.
Once you have identified the main keywords, just add some modifiers to your keyword and type them in google. Words you can add for this exercise include checklist, cheat sheet, download, pdf, etc.
Here are the top 3 ways of doing your keyword analysis and research.
- Talk to real people: Develop a creative way of gathering some valuable information from your audience. For instance, you could conduct exit interviews, telephone surveys or even incentivize some polls and surveys with discount coupon rewards. Or you could join Facebook groups in a specific niche and follow the conversations until you identify common problems which need resolving.
- Use keyword research tools: Google Keyword Planner, Google Trends, Ahrefs keyword Explorer, Semrush and MOZ are some of the most popular keyword tools. These tools can help you know how popular or hot a certain keyword is. If a keyword that has a lot of searches points to a problem that users are trying to find an answer to.
- Forums and Q&A sites: Visit forums and Q&A sites like Quora and look for what users are asking. Look for a topic that has a lot of questions or a question that attracts a lot of debate.
2. Rank for mid-tail keywords around your niche
The fact that you have found a hot keyword doesn’t necessarily mean you will rank for it easily.
If the keyword has a lot of competition, the websites that have more authority will outrank you and you might never get traffic.
The best approach would be to check your competition in order to identify keywords that have very weak content.
Mid-tail keywords are typically anything between 200 to 1000 searches per month in a specific country.
Google has since changed its algorithm and it is now very easy to rank for a keyword in a matter of days.
However, you must first be recognized as an authority in the niche. This can be done either by writing long-form content, at least 1.5 times longer than the top 10 results, or to write both the long-form content, and a few other articles around the same topic, which link to your primary, long-form content. The latter adds topical relevance, which is some which search engines love.
Once you have found a keyword that has lots of traffic but with very little competition, start creating high-quality content around it.
After a couple of months, your domain authority will improve and ranking for the more competitive keywords will be easier.
Keyword analysis and research is also important when creating content. Use a keyword tool to come up with several variations to your primary keyword. Your keyword phrase might be attracting 1,000 visitors a month but also ranking for a combination of 4 other variations of the same keyword might pump up the traffic to 2,000 or more hits.
3. Write quality content focused on user intent
Your content creation strategy should have one main goal – giving useful and valuable information, which targets not the exact keyword, but what the user wants to do when they are performing that specific search – the user intent.
Do not get too consumed with optimizing the content for SEO that you forget about writing for the human reader. While your SEO efforts will help increase customer acquisition, your quality content will guarantee customer retention. Bad quality content will give your users a bad experience and this will result in high bounce rates.
If you are writing about boosting and email list, and want to create a checklist for it, your users primary intent is going to be not just boosting the email list, but picking up leads which they can convert to business – so make sure you are targeting that intent.
When creating content, try to think of how you can offer great value to your readers.
Go above and beyond what they expect.
One clever way of doing this is offering an additional free downloadable resource either as a pdf or an excel sheet. Like we said above, if you are trying to rank for a checklist, make that list available as an excel sheet, document with checkboxes and PDF. Make them all available for download (with one little trick we’ll mention in the next section).
For instance, if you were writing a blog on how to start a business from scratch, you can offer your readers a free business plan which they can download and edit. Alternatively, you can offer your entire article a downloadable file.
This way, you will be offering them extra value.
Let’s say you are comparing two products, take as an example, WooCommerce and Shopify and you’re creating a comparison of the two.
When somebody is performing this particular search, their intent is in choosing the right platform for them. The key to creating a piece of content which works is to make it easy for the user to understand the differences, and which one would work best, so for example, this would be valid sections
- What is WooCommerce and what is shopify, a simple introduction
- Who is each platform for
- Features of both platforms, and differences in what is offered
- How much does WooCommerce cost vs Shopify
- What are the advantages and disadvantages of using these two platforms
This makes it easy for the user to understand exactly what they will get from both platforms and be able to make a judgement call.
A solid example of all of this put into action can be seen on this CollectiveRay article: WooCommerce vs Shopify.
4. Use list building plugins to offer downloads
Once you have created awesome content, you can go ahead and install a list building plugin. Suffice it to say that it is almost impossible to boost email list numbers without these plugins.
But the key is in knowing how to set it up for lead generation and increasing list numbers.
You need to offer the valuable download in exchange for an email address.
Since you will have focused your content on meeting the needs of your readers, they will trust you and will be more than happy to exchange their best email in exchange for downloading your resource.
Setting up an effective lead magnet entails offering something that will motivate your reader to leave their email, but if you are offering a download which targets their specific user intent, rather than something random, you will have won half the battle.
Instead of displaying the download link, they will enter their email address and then your optin plugin will automatically send them the link.
Make sure to set up multiple download buttons, starting with one at the very top of the article. If you really want to get aggressive, you can create a “Welcome Mat” or large popup as soon as the user enter the page, with the download offer.
This simple tweak can grow your email list exponentially over the years.

5. Promote your content and rank it
The final and most important way to boost email list numbers is to do then do some promotion in order to get some good links. This will make sure that your content will rank and start getting user intent, organic traffic which will convert.
Start by sharing your articles on social media platforms.
You can also send out the links of the most recent articles to your subscribers, these are already your fans, so ask them nicely whether they can share it even further.
Also, take time to go through all the posts on your blog and create relevant links from all related content in your blog.
If your blog is powered by WordPress, install the Yoast SEO plugin and use it to optimize your articles for SEO around your specific keywords.
Once that is done, continue promoting your content on the internet until you start getting lots of quality links.
To make this process easy, just identify some of the best posts you have and concentrate your promotion efforts on them. Once these get noticed, the links will start trickling down to the other ones as well and before you know it, you will be getting more email subscribers by the day.
To conclude, boosting an email list is not that difficult once you know this trick. They key is in offering something that the user actually needs in exchange for their email address.
