If you’re not looking for a quick win SEO is the best option for you. It takes time though. It will take time for you site get ranked and drive organic traffic but it’s worth it.
There are many things you can do in order to improve your SEO. Let me tell you the 2 most important.
- Create content around your topic
- Get backlinks to your site and your inner pages
Always check the first 10 results on Google for the keyword phrase you’re targeting and do all you can do to create a better page than them. After that, it’s time for links.
I don’t use any tricks and I don’t pay for traffic. Most of my traffic comes from search, and the rest comes from social media. But both come from content marketing. The recipe is fairly simple:
- Create great content
- Optimize for social (Twitter card, share buttons, great image, etc.)
- Push on social media through my networks
Yeah, it keeps on going like that. People on social media see my amazing content (and occasionally some of my less amazing content, but we won’t talk about that). They like what they see and they share it on their accounts.
Sometimes a blogger sees what I wrote and links to it from their blog. Over time, the social shares and the inbound links have built my website up so as to rank well enough in Google to attract some searches.
It’s all pretty organic, except that I do push my content in my networks.
I work as the in-house SEO for an SEO agency based in the US. I created my own site “Structured SEO” to give me a place to test SEO tactics to see what works and doesn’t without risking negatively affecting a clients site.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) has been the most effective way for me to drive traffic for my niche. I have tried Youtube, FB, Adwords, etc but when it comes to return-on-investment ROI nothing has ever come close to SEO.
SEO encompasses a lot of different tactics/strategies and what is effective really comes down to what type of site you are trying to rank. For my site, I have found 2 tactics work best for me.
The first tactic is creating long-form “How To” content. This helps my site rank for different keywords, keeps people engaged on my site and has generated many links naturally.
The second tactic is guest posting as a link building strategy. I have tried many different strategies to build links but guest posting has been the most effective. It can be time-consuming but I have found that by using this strategy I can target exceptional links from very high authority.
None of these tactics are new. What I have found interesting is mixing long-form content and a few high authority links have boosted my traffic and generated links naturally that I might not otherwise have been able to get. This has really helped improve my rankings for very high-value commercial keywords.
The best way how to start building traffic to a website is creating a valuable, shareable and indexable content. Based on the gathered data, organic traffic is still the best source with the highest return on investment. Users typing their queries in the search engines are basically showing in a real-time what are they interested in. Compared to other channels, the clear user-intent is a very strong asset of the organic visits.
In general, the traffic sources that I am trying to build are based mainly on the three following approaches.
- Organic traffic from the search engines – As mentioned above, the most converting traffic usually comes from the search engines. However, it’s recommended to diversify the sources to avoid having most of the traffic just from one channel. If Google implements any updates that would negatively impact your site’s rankings, you would lose most of the visitors at once.
- Guest posts published on highly reputable sites – For building brand awareness and being the go-to source in your niche, guest posting is one of the greatest ways to start with. Not only would you get some backlinks as a bonus, but also, more importantly, you will profile your site and yourself as an authority in your niche.
- Social media presence appropriate to your industry – Being active on social media is getting more and more important in driving traffic and it’s a good idea to choose one network that you will master. In most of the cases, LinkedIn or Twitter would be the best choices for the tech related sites, whereas Instagram would be suitable for the entertainment industry.
In addition to those three abovementioned topics, there may be more relevant ones depending on your business. Therefore, testing other traffic sources and looking for the best ones in terms of ROI is highly recommended approach.
I would say that the best way to increase traffic depends a lot of your niche and your website. But it’s essential for any business to grow. My favorite activities are the following:
1- Affiliate marketing: paying per click or per impressions can be very risky.
Spending all your budget into AdWords and other CPM media buys doesn’t necessarily bring you more conversions. That’s why a better strategy is affiliate marketing. Affiliates can become your top sellers and it’s easy to scale because when affiliates are paid per sale they can deliver not just traffic but conversions to your website. For affiliates to be successful they have to promote your business and this can be done with many acquisition channels: there are affiliates specialised in SEO, PPC, Email Marketing.
CRO is a great way to build more conversions from your existing traffic, which means you save money and time that you normally spend on traffic acquisition. CRO can be done by looking closely at your users with a critical eye, getting feedbacks and building a more customer-centric website. The more users love your website, the more they will come back to it (saving you also money for remarketing).
3- User experience:
This goes hand in hand with CRO because it’s about improving the overall experience on the website. User experience is also a very good way to increase organic traffic because it lowers dwell time and pogo-sticking, that Google really doesn’t like.
4- Build content off unique data:
Investing big on content can often be a risky move. Simply pumping more money into your content marketing won’t necessarily get you results. In the same vein, not committing enough is likely to yield much. That’s why focusing your efforts on bigger plays can be a better strategy to follow. If you’re looking to earn mentions in top publications and generate all the traffic that comes with that, sourcing original data is one of your best bets. Journalists love original data, especially if it can be used to tell a wider story. Add to that the right timing and you’re onto a winner.

I’d say you need to focus on relevance, on-page SEO, and social promotion because these factors drive high-quality organic traffic to your site.
The traffic is only as good as its relevance. Plenty of websites with tons of traffic have low conversions. The key here is providing your prospects what they want. It all begins with studying your target audience demographics carefully and creating a content strategy accordingly. The more you know about their habits, likes and dislikes, problems, and potential solutions, the better.
Next, optimize your on-page SEO by updating your Meta descriptions, image alt text, and content per your keyword research. I prefer targeting long-tail keywords as it is easier to rank for them on search engines. They are also a great way to optimize your site for voice search.
Promote, promote, and promote! Keep sharing your blog posts and other website content on the suitable social media. Time your social shares perfectly. Take advantage of holidays, special occasions, trending social topics, and the right hashtags to improve your social marketing efforts. Make it a point to engage your audience on social media. A simple “Thanks” can go a long way in creating customer engagement.
There are a variety of ways to drive traffic to your website. You first have to decide if you continuously want to pay for your traffic or if you want to make a one-off investment for a steady but slower traffic flow.
This means: will you pay a price for each visitor to your website by buying paid ads on platforms such as Google Adwords or Facebook ads? Or will you invest your own time or your content writers time to create unique content on your site and rank in Google’s search results?
Paying for ads can get very expensive very quickly. Whereas creating high-quality content can cost a lot of money upfront but over time the cost per visitor will shrink as the content gets linked to, ranks higher in Google and might even go viral.
