Which are the Best Web Design Tools for a Construction Company Website?
If you’re just starting out and you’re on a really low budget then a DIY Website Builder will get you up and running.
The advantage of this type of tool is that they’re low cost and easy to use.
The downside? Well, the end result will look acceptable but it’s not going to win you any web design awards.
But think about it. You’re in the construction industry. You build stuff for your customers and you do a great job because you know what you’re doing.
So how many times have you been called in to fix someone’s DIY bodge job? That’s the thing – you don’t want to end up like one of your punters with a DIY website do you?
As a builder you want people to look at your website and see a professionally built website that will reflect well on you. Whether we like it or not people make snap judgements on you just by looking at your website.
So my strong recommendation would be to build a website using a tool called WordPress.
Now without going into too much detail, WordPress is the world’s most popular web design tool. In fact over 25% of all websites run on WordPress which is a HUGE amount.
There are loads of reasons for using WordPress but here are four important ones:
- It’s free – 100% OpenSource so no licensing costs
- It’s SEO friendly – SEO = Search Engine Friendly so it performs well in Google
- It’s popular – it’s not an exotic tool so Developers and Designers are easy to find and costs are reasonable
- There are loads of low cost ready made templates
How Much Will A Construction Business Website Cost?
If you go down the Website Builder route you’re just looking at the web hosting costs which are around £5 or £6 a month. See Pickaweb’s web hosting packages here.
If you use WordPress you’ve got a choice there. You can either use a ready made WordPress Theme (template) or you can get a custom website built for you.
If you use a WordPress Theme then these cost around £40 to £50. Then you’ll need to get them built. You can find low cost web design companies that can do this for around £300 to £500 for a website that has between 5 to 10 pages.
If you get a custom designed website then the costs are going to be around £1000 to £1500.
In my personal opinion I think that the WordPress Templates are the best bet.
Website Templates vs Custom Web Design
OK, so if you’ve set your sights on a really professional website built using WordPress. The two main options are to buy a ready made WordPress Template (called a Theme) or you can get a web designer to custom build a website for you.
Let’s look at each in turn.
WordPress Templates for Construction Website
The main advantages of using a ready made WordPress Template are cost, timescales, features and customer satisfaction.
The templates cost around £50, they are fantastic quality and you can see what you’re going to get before you start which means that you’ll generally be more satisfied with the end result.
They’re also mobile friendly which is really important these days. People aren’t sitting at home or in the office using a desktop. They’re out and about using a mobile phone or tablet to browse the internet.
The technical term is your website is Responsive which means it adapts to the screen the person browsing is using.
Also you can expect quite a quick turnaround with a template. As long as you can provide the web designer with the content you should be up & running in days rather than weeks.
On the downside there is always the possibility that someone else will have the same template. But that’s a small risk and one that’s worth taking when you see the end result. Just check your main competitors in advance. The chances are they won’t be using the same one.

Custom Design for Construction Website
The alternative is to get a custom built website. Normally expect to pay from £1000 to £1500 for a decent, mobile friendly design.
The advantage is that you know exactly what you’re going to get. If you’re not sure which web designer to use you can always run a web design competition where various designers present their designs and you chose the winner.
This way you’ll get exactly what you want.
The downside is that you have to be more hands on in this method and that means it will take up more of your time.
It will also take longer to build your site – usually weeks rather than days for a template based approach.
How to Structure A Construction Website and the Type of Content You Should Create
OK, so you’ve decided on the type of design, now you need to look at the structure of your website and the type of content you need to create.
Now one big problem I see with lots of Construction websites is that they don’t create enough content.
For example, they will create a ‘Services’ page that lists out all the services they do. That’s a big mistake.
Well quite simply because you’re not casting a wide enough net for Google.
People and other businesses aren’t searching on ‘Services’. They’re looking for specific services like ‘Groundworks Contractor Twickenham’ or ‘Loft Extensions Darlington’.
So the first thing you need to do is to list our EVERY SINGLE SERVICE you offer. Yes, that means every single service.
The reason is that you need to create a page for every service. And for every page you need to write at least 500 words (yes, that’s correct – five hundred words) of content.
The reason for this is twofold. Firstly Google seems to like longer pages. It’s probably because it loves to add all that interesting, relevant and expert content to it’s database.
Secondly your prospective clients are doing their research. Which supplier will they have more confidence in? One that has a general Services page with a list of services or one that has a lot of relevant and interesting content for them.
Exactly – they’ll feel much more confident with a Construction company that takes the time to explain what they do.
Now if you’re thinking that you can’t write 500 words, just imagine that you’re speaking to a potential new customer. They’ve got a ton of questions. Things like:
- How long will it take?
- How much does it cost?
- What’s the process?
- What planning permission is required?
- Do I need an architect?
- Is there any guarantee?
- What materials do you use?
- Do you have examples of previous work?
So if you create a list of the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) that you often hear you’ve got the basis for the content that you need for your website.
How Do I Market My Construction Business on the Internet
To some extent it depends on your target market. Smaller Construction businesses are probably targeting a more local market – say a 10 to 15 mile radius from where they’re based.
Whereas larger construction firms may target regional or even national projects.
Either way there are some basics that need to be covered. Above we’ve looked at creating service specific pages as a starting point but here are some other important points:
On Page SEO for Construction Company Websites
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. That’s just a fancy way of saying making your website search engine friendly.
On Page means that you’re making changes to your website – these are ‘on’ your website, not on someone else’s (see below).
For example if you run a search in Google then you’ll see two or three lines of content for each website listed.
This is text that appears in the code of your website. In this case this is the Page Title and the Page Description. The general term for these is Metatags – but that’s just jargon.
So on every page you need to make sure that you include these correctly. They need to be unique to the content on each particular page.
These should include your keywords which are the sort of thing people search on in Google like ‘Extension Builder Bristol’.
You need to include these in the Metatags as well as in the Headings on each page. Headings are like headings in a document and they help Google make sense of the page.
Also use them in the URL (that’s just jargon for the page name as it appears in the browser). So for example if your domain name is localbuildingco.co.uk and you are based in Birmingham and your page is about building extensions then your URL could be localbuildingco.co.uk/extension-builder-birmingham
Then you just need to make sure you have plenty of relevant content on each page. Try and aim for 500 words.
Off Page SEO for Construction Company Websites
OK, so you’ve done the ‘on page’ optimization. Now for Off Page SEO.
That just means you’re getting other website to link to you and it’s harder than it sounds, but not impossible.
You can start with some easy win like setting up local listings with Google, Bing and Yahoo.
Then you can get listed in local listing websites like Yell or 118. There are loads of these that are authority websites that will offer a free listing. Some have paid listings but just go for ones that have a free one. These are often referred to as NAP Citations (NAP = Name, Address and Phone).
Then look for construction related directories or even trade bodies that you are a member of or which you can join. You’ll often find that there are plenty that you can get listed in.
Initially these will be enough to get you started.
Longer term you can create a blog and add content regularly. You could answer common questions or create content about projects you are working on. Or maybe take short videos with a mobile phone and create blog content based around this.

OK, so you’ve got your construction business website all set up maybe using a wordpress construction company theme or you got a bespoke construction website designed for you.
You’ve got great content and you’re starting to get leads and new business coming through your website. That’s great.
