How To Resell Hosting

If you are a web designer or developer you probably often find yourself recommending a hosting company. You may be wondering how you could resell hosting to your customers for extra ongoing recurring revenue.

Watch  the following video where we explain in detail

Hosting is a super profitable and fast growing business.

The good news is that done well reselling hosting is a powerful way to generate extra ongoing income.

There are several steps that you need to follow & I will be sharing that with you today.

Step #1: Find a Reseller Provider

The first step is to identify  the hosting company you wish to work with. There are different types of hosting.

See if they offer reseller options.

Look for a company that offers 24×7 support 365 days a year. It is so important to be able to get hold of a talented technician should you have any issues with your websites. We find that our customers love our live chat support because they get instant answers to their questions.

Check to see what people are saying of that company. Check in review sites & forums to make sure that they are the right fit for you.

Step #2: Select the Right Approach

There are several ways you can resell.

  1. Get a Reseller Plan
  2. Sign up for an Affiliate Hosting
  3. Setup a VPS
  4. or a Dedicated Server

The advantages of getting a Reseller Plan are:

  • You get an admin control panel called WHM/Cpanel where you can setup your own hosting plans with the features that you require
  • You can manage all your clients via WHM.
  • You can offer your customers get their own control panel so that they can manage the basic aspects of their hosting themselves and have much more control. (They can setup email accounts, forwarders, autoresponders and much more.)
  • You also get support by the hosting company should you have any issues with your customer´s accounts.

cPanel is a fantastic hosting control panel tool which we have used ourselves for over a decade.

We love it and our customers do too.

The advantages of getting a VPS or Dedicated Server:

As you get more & more customers you may find that you want to upgrade to a VPS or maybe even a dedicated server. This will give you several big advantages. Firstly you do not have to use the “standard” hosting set by the hosting company.

You can set the limits on things like emails sent per hour, etc.. Also you may want certain versions of software & this option gives you as much control as you want. Also, power – you get to choose how much RAM you can use so that you give your clients a lot more bang for their buck.

You are in full control but you would have to install your own hosting control panel software.

There are alternatives to cPanel such as  Plesk, Webmin, Zpanel etc. To keep the costs down you could get an unmanaged VPS or Dedicated Server.

The disadvantage would be that if you get stuck or need any help with your customers sites you would need to sort the issues out yourself. Having the support of your hosting company and working together as a team can make a difference to the success of reselling hosting.

If you find yourself swamped by customer support inquiries you will not be able to focus on what is important to you. To build those websites for your customers.

Advantages of an Affiliate approach:

The customer is dealing with the chosen company directly. If the customer experiences any issues with their emails etc they will be contacting the hosting company directly.

This is a great way to get a commission on each hosting sale but without having to worry about supporting your customers. This is particularly attractive if you are a small web designer company and you have not got the resources to support your customers tech support inquiries.

Step #3: Get Software To Automate The Process

Next, you should get a professional reseller software. Anything that is automated stands better changes of being successful.

We recommend WHMCS. It is a fantastic billing tool aimed at hosting professionals and web designers.

You can connect the application to your reseller plan so that when there is an order and the payment has been made the order will be process automatically, the customer will receive a welcome email with their hosting details & invoice. There is also a customer control panel feature so that they can see what plans they have with you, view past invoices etc.

We offer a free WHMCS licence with some of our plans which you may want to check.

There are other alternative reseller hosting applications you can use such as Hostbill, Clientexec etc.

Offering hosting is a great way to generate a residual income. As I have shared with you above there are different approaches you can take to do so. Some were you are more involved than others. It really depends on  your current situation.

The main thing you have to take into account is who you choose as your hosting partner.  I would like to take this opportunity to share with you recent feedback from one of our resellers.

“Being a reseller for Pickaweb, has given me the opportunity to provide my customers, a solid, professional hosting solution and as a web developer to have the privilege to work with the best support team in my 9 years in the profession. When you work with Pickaweb, you feel like you are part of a team working together.”

Thanks for sharing. I have one question: between the affiliate programmes and the reseller programes which one do think is the most profitable and less hassle? Also does the reseller software have the ability to register Domain? How does it work?

Look forward to hearing from you soon!

    Hi Chris,
    Thank you for response.
The less hassle option is the affiliate option. Anyone that clicks on your affiliate link and places an order eg; hosting or domain names you would get a commission.
If you are an affiliate we take care of the customer.

The reseller hosting option is best if you would like to be more involved in the actual hosting that you are offering your customers.

We can give you a coupon code for special reseller domain name pricing.

What you could do is to start off as an affiliate, then once you get a feel for it you might find that you want to dedicate more of your time to promoting it & then you may be ready for a reseller account.

Are you familiar with hosting, etc.? Let me know & I can help you make the best decision

      Hi Pilar,

Sorry for the delay in replying your last message but I have been extremely busy with new projects.

I currently doing affiliation only as i found it more easy to manage. however I will like to resell hosting but not sure exactly how to start. Do you get like a control panel where you get to manage all your clients hosing and they can have access to their own control panel so they can manage their hosting? i.e add email accounts, add a new domain, etc.

also Preferable i would like to add the domain search in my own website but will i need to become a domain registry? will i need a Dedicated servers or virtual private server for this… i see that on your website you have that facility where they can order directly [domain+hosting] from your website.

I really appreciate all your help on this matter.

PS i have just subscribe to your YouTube channel…

      Kind regards,

    Hi Chris,
With the reseller plan you get an admin control panel called WHM.

There you can setup your own plans with the features you wish to offer your customers.

Your customers get their own cPanel control panel to manage everything themselves.

You can resell domains via Pickaweb.

You can use the WHMCS software to manage all the admin of your customers and automate the order process.
    WHMCS is fantastic.

Thank you for subscribing to our Youtube channel.

    All the best.
