Hi, Tony here and in today’s podcast we’re asking, should you build your own website or get a web designer to build one for you?
Now this is a question that I do get a lot and the simple answer is there is no simple answer, unfortunately.
But, I’m going to give you all the different options so that you can make an informed decision, give the advantages and the disadvantages of each.
DIY Website Builder – Entry Level Website on a Budget
So, if you want to build your own websites then we can start by looking at website builder tools.
At Pickaweb we’ve got one that’s really easy to use, it can do all of the basic things that you need a website to do. You just choose a template, add your text, your logo, your images, create different pages, click on publish, and you’re up and running.
You have a lot of control over it so you can change pages, you can change text, you can add content, that sort of thing so you’re always in control.
And, it’s a great option if you really are on a budget, if you’re just starting out. They can do all of the things that that a full website can do. You’ve got to control over the SEO like the keywords, and as I say, you can add as many pages as you want, that type of thing.
So, that’s a good option if you’re just starting out.
But is that going to be the website that you want for years and years to come?
I doubt it.
OK, it’s enough to get you up in the air but is that going to take your places in the long term?
I’m not really convinced.
So, you probably want to be looking at a more robust option.
WordPress – The Most Popular Web Design Tool
So, something like WordPress is what I would definitely recommend.
Over 25% of all websites these days are built using WordPress!
So, it’s an extremely powerful, resilient tool which is very, very popular. And, there’s loads and loads of designers that use WordPress. So, you’re going to find there’s a very competitive market for it.
Hiring A Web Designer
So, let’s look at that option of getting a designer to build your website.
Now, the advantages, obviously, are that you’re going to get what you want. You don’t have to spend time learning how to use a tool.
Your time is valuable. You want to be out there selling your products and services not learning how to build and maintain a website.
This is a useful skill to have, but is it the most important part of your business?
I doubt it.
And, really when you consider a designer that is going to take it off your hands, they’ll build your website for you. Then, I think that’s probably a good investment to make.
Template Based Design – A Low Cost, High-Quality Option
Now, when it comes to the actual costs of building a website you could just hand it over to a designer, and just give them a blank cheque and they could go and build it for you.
You could end up paying thousands for a website, but you don’t necessarily need to do that.
You could look at a template option.
There’s loads and loads of places where you can buy really high quality ready-made WordPress templates and they’re mobile friendly (called responsive design). So, you could choose one of these templates and get a designer to customize it for you as opposed to building something from the bottom up.
Bespoke Web Design – Higher Cost & Exact Specification
If you build something bespoke from the bottom up, that’s going to increase the cost, it’s going to increase the timescales and it could possibly make life a bit more complex for you.
So, if you’re going to think about getting a designer to build it, I would definitely veer towards the WordPress option.
If you’re selling online, WordPress it’s got a tool that you can add on to it called WooCommerce, which is a really good solid eCommerce platform. So, that’s what I would recommend.
Now, the advantages of having a designer is you’ve got someone you can just pass stuff over to and they’ll just implement it for you. If you need a new plugin, if you need a new feature, if you need a new page on your website, then a designer is going to do that all for you.
Tony’s Advice – Get A Designer To Help You
So, if you want me to give you my sort of independent advice, I would veer towards getting a designer, getting a professional to help you.
Yes, you can build your own website and I don’t deny that, and you can get up and running quickly, you can be in control.
But is the end result really going to be something that you’re going to sit back and be proud of and say, “Yeah, that’s my business. That’s my online presence.”
This is your internet real estate here we’re talking about and when people come to your website, you want them to have a good impression of you and your business.
So, to cut a long story short, yes, build your own website if you’re really on a tight budget – you just want to get up and running ASAP.
Then, as soon as you can maybe- consider getting a more professional option done. That will probably involve getting a web designer.
If you don’t have the budget to get something built bespoke and custom for you then consider a website template. If you go to a website called themeforest.net for example, you’ll find loads and loads of really high-quality WordPress templates (called WordPress themes) in a whole range of different industries for you so they’re all ready to go.
All right, I hope you found that useful. And, we’re here as always with loads of hints and tips for you. So, do tune in and pick up our next podcast. Okay. Speak to you soon, then. Bye-bye.
