.UK domain names – Who can register them?

.uk domain

What are .UK Domain Names?

.UK domain names area a new (United Kingdom) domain extension that is becoming super popular.

It is a nice and short version. Looks great.

There are some restrictions in terms of who can register them and we explain this below.

If you already have a .co.uk domain name it may be a good idea to register the .uk domain version of it now.

What are the advantages of registering a .uk domain name?

Nominet thinks a .uk domain name puts more emphasis on the actual domain name.

It also makes the name shorter and easier to say.

So what do you do if you have a .co.uk domain and you want to keep it?

Don´t worry the current .uk domain names aren´t going anywhere they will still be available to buy and your .co.uk or .org.uk will keep working.

So what if someone else registers the same domain but just under .uk?

I understand this could be a worry for some people, if I own shop.co.uk I don´t want someone else to have shop.uk

So what does that mean for you?

There´s no rush and no need to panic. If you have a .co.uk domain name Nominet has reserved the .uk equivalent in your name already. It will stay reserved in your name as long as your .co.uk domain stays active until 10 June 2019. You can double check who owns the rights to the .uk domain by going to this website and searching with the new .uk extension.  http://www.dotuklaunch.co.uk/im-existing-customer

    Hi Krys,
Is the .co.uk version of the domain name you wish to register already registered by someone else?
If so that may be the reason.
