What are .co.uk domain names?

.co.uk domains are the commercial & general type of UK domain extension.

Who can register a .co.uk website?

Anyone can register a .co.uk domain name. They are issued on a first come, first served basis.

They can be registered by an individual or by a company.

AAs long as you are not infringing another person or company’s copyright or trademark then you can register a .co.uk name. If you are unsure you should always consult a legal advisor.

How long can they be registered for?

A .co.uk can be registered for between 1 year and 10 years into the future.

How long can .co.uk domain names be registered for?

.co.uk domain names can be registered for between 1 year and 10 years into the future.

Do I get a Certificate of Ownership for my domain?

No. Everything is done electronically. You can verify your ownership by searching the Whois on the Nominet website at http://www.nominet.org.uk/

Can they be registered for more than 10 years?

No. The maximum period that a .co.uk domain name can be registered for is up to 10 years into the future.

By way of an example, if you registered a .co.uk on the 1st of January 2010 for 10 years & its expiry date was 1st of January 2020, then you would need to wait until 1st Jaunary 2011 before you could add 1 more year to it so that the new expiry date is 1st of January 2021. At this point you would not be able to add any more years to your registration. You would need to wait until 1st January 2012 to add the next year on.

What is the process for renewing a .co.uk domain?

When your domain name is set to expire you will be sent several domain renewal reminders by email. These will be sent to the listed owner email address in our system. The renewal reminders are sent 90 days, 60 days, 30 days, 10 days, 5 days & on the expiry date.

The domain renewal email will include a link to the Pickaweb Client Area & you can login & renew your domain name.

Can co.uk domains be set to auto-renew?

Yes, you can set your domain to auto-renew in your Pickaweb Client Area. As long as the card details that we have on file are up to date then your domain will auto renew.

What happens if my domain name has expired?

If your domain has expired then you have up to 30 days to renew it. Again, just login to your Pickaweb Client Area to do this. If you are unable to do this, just contact our support team using the support link above & we will confirm everything for you.

Who administers .co.uk domains?

UK Domain Names are administered by an organization called Nominet. Their website can be found at http://www.nominet.org.uk/ Unless dealing with a dispute, Nominet does not generally deal directly with the public, but rather through accredited registrars such as Pickaweb.

What is an IPS Tag?

An IPS Tag is a naming system managed by Nominet which identifies which of their approved Registrars manages a particular domain name.

What is Pickaweb’s IPS Tag?

Pickaweb’s IPS Tag is PICKAWEB (all capitals).

How do I transfer a UK domain name?

What happens if I have a dispute over the ownership of a .co.uk?

In instances where a .co.uk domain name is registered to an individual then they have the rights of ownership.

If the domain is registered in the name of a company then the domain is owned by the company.

If you are unable to agree on the ownership of a domain name then you will need to apply to the Nominet Dispute Resolution Service (DRS). Details of the DRS can be found at http://www.nominet.org.uk/disputes

How can I tell who owns a domain name?

You can verify the ownership of a .co.uk extension by using the WHOIS search on the Nominet website at http://www.nominet.org.uk

Can I hide my details from the WHOIS?

If you are registering a .co.uk on a personal basis, for yourself rather than for business use or for a charity or other non profit organization then you can register it on a personal basis. This allows you to hide your contact details from the WHOIS when someone performs a search.

You can set your domain to personal when registering your domain. If you have already registered your domain & you now wish to make the details private, just contact us & we will make the changes for you.

However, if your domain is registered on behalf of a company then you can not hide your details in the whois. It is important that you are aware of this before registering. If you do register your domain as being personal & you then subsequently use it for business purposes than this change should be notified to Nominet to avoid causing issues in future.
