Using the WordPress Menu editor, you can easily create multiple menus and then associate them with different menu locations on your site. So, it’s important to know how to create custom menus.

Follow these steps –

  1. Log in to your WordPress admin panel.
  2. In the left navigation, go to Appearance and click on Menus.
  3. On the menu editor page, click the ‘Create a new menu’ link.
  4. Enter your menu name.
  5. Click the ‘Create Menu’ button.
  6. Now, add the menu items as required.
  7. Finally, click the ‘Save Menu’ button.

When you’re adding menu items, you can select the same from the boxes on the left. There are pages, categories and links that you can include in the menu you’re creating.

In the Menu section, you’ll notice two tabs at the top – Edit Menus and Manage Locations. Once you have created your menu and added the items you wanted to and have it saved, you can go to the ‘Manage Locations’ tab where you can assign them specific locations on your site.

In the ‘Manage Locations’ section, you’ll find out how many menus are supported by the theme you’re using. For example, Elegant themes features three menus while there are others that have a 2-menu structure. Therefore, the number of menus you’ll actually be able to display varies according to the structural liberty of your theme, regardless of how many custom menus you may want to create.

While creating custom menus, there are some best practices that you should follow from the user’s point of view. First and foremost, the names that you pick for the menus should be self-describing. Second, the names in the structure should be created in a way that users don’t have a hard time understanding them. Third, you should remember to arrange the links in an appropriate order. It’s also recommended that you don’t make the navigational structure more than 3-layer deep.
