An A record is the DNS record that is responsible for mapping hostnames to IP addresses. The A record is essential because it allows DNS servers to identify and locate your website and its various services on the Internet. Without an A record, your visitors will not be able to access your website, FTP servers, or email accounts.

When we have your account set up at our server, the DNS zone will have the default A records set up to point the domain to our server. However, if you plan on pointing your domain to an external server where you plan to host your domain, you would want to edit the A record of your domain.

You can add/edit the A record of your domain through cPanel.

How to Add an A Record

1. Log in to cPanel.
2. Click on ‘Advanced DNS zone editor’ under Domains option.
3. Select a domain from the drop down menu.
4. Type in the Name of the record (which, in this case is, A).
5. Type the record’s time to live in the TTL text box.(Time to live specifies how long a particular record should be kept in memory, in seconds, before it should be refreshed.)
6. Type in the Address of the record (the IP address to which you want the domain to point)
7. Click Add A Record.

How to Edit an A Record

1. Log in to cPanel.
2. Click on ‘Advanced DNS zone editor’ under Domains option.
3. Select a domain from the drop down menu. This will display all the zone file records of the selected domain.
4. Click on the ‘Edit’ link next to the ‘A record’ that you want to edit.
5. Enter the new IP address to which you want to point the domain, in the ‘Address’ field.
6. Click on the ‘Edit record’ button.

If you don’t have the Advanced DNS zone editor option in your cPanel, you can always use the ‘Simple DNS Zone Editor’ option within cPanel to add additional A records. However, this option just wouldn’t let you edit the existing default ones. You will have to get in touch with our support team to edit A records, in this case.
