Importing contacts into GmailIn this video, you’ll find out how to import mail and contacts from other email accounts into Gmail.

You don’t need to manually import any of your mails or contacts from other email accounts into Gmail. Among other multiple useful features, Gmail also allows you to automatically accomplish this task within minutes.

Here’s how to do it

  1. Sign in to your Gmail account.
  2. Click the Settings link in the top right corner.
  3. Now, go to the Accounts and Import tab.
  4. Click the Important mail and contacts button.
  5. Enter the email from where you want to import mail and contacts.
  6. Click the Continue button.
  7. Enter the password of that email account.
  8. Click the Continue button.
  9. Select the Import options; you can change the label as you like.
  10. Click the Start Import button.
  11. Click the OK button to close the window.

The import that you started appears under ‘Import mail and contacts’ section. Depending on the volume of the mails and contacts being imported, it may take anywhere between a few hours to two days. Even when you leave the page that you’re currently on, the import will continue and you’ll be notified once it’s been completed.

Suppose you started an import in Gmail but you don’t want to continue with it anymore. Without worrying for a bit, you can click the ‘stop’ link as shown in the video. You can halt importing of mail and contacts even when the initial phase has completed.

Let’s go back to the inbox and verify whether our messages have appeared. You can see two email messages labeled as Yahoo in the inbox. Even if you click on the label name on the left hand side itself, all these messages will show up there. If you click on Contacts, you’ll be able to view all the contact information that matters to you. The ‘Import Complete’ message that you see at the top of your Gmail page can be dismissed by clicking the Hide link.

That’s how you can successfully import both email messages and contacts from other accounts into your Gmail inbox.
