A WordPress theme is a a website template for a blog.

There are both free themes and premium themes which can be applied to WordPress sites.

Whichever theme you pick up for your site, it does not alter the underlying software. All that a theme does is that it modifies the way a WordPress site is presented.

Free WordPress.Org Theme Installation

The WordPress.org theme directory offers you a wide range of themes you don’t need to pay for. While choosing a free theme from the directory, you should consider criteria like color, columns, layout and features. You can also choose your free theme on the basis of subjects like holiday, photo blogging and seasonal.

Do the following:

  • Log into your WordPress Dashboard.
  • In the left side menu, navigate to Appearance.
  • Click on Themes.
  • On the next page, you’ll see available themes.
  • Click on Activate button for your selected theme.

Remember that you already have a theme installed, activating a new theme will quickly change the appearance and features of your WordPress site. Therefore, you should practice caution when switching to new themes so that you don’t face any kind of discrepancies.

Premium Theme Installation

If you plan to use a theme that’s not available in the WordPress.org theme directory or have a bought (and downloaded) a premium theme, you can also upload it from WP Admin.

Do the following:

  • Log into your WordPress Dashboard.
  • In the left side menu, navigate to Appearance.
  • Click on Themes.
  • On the next page, Click on Add New.
  •  Click on Upload.
  •  Click on Install Now.
  •  Click on Activate to apply the theme.

Always make sure that the premium theme you’re applying to your site is compatible with your installed WordPress version. If not, it could break your website easily.
