OK, so you’ve registered a domain name and you’re wondering what’s the next step.
In this post we’ll explain the options so that you make an informed decision.
The first thing to consider is whether you want to use the domain name for hosting and email services or if you want to use your domain name to re-direct to another domain name. We’ll look at both cases.
First up, if you want to set up a website then you’ll need a web hosting service. Just choose the hosting plan you need from our range.
If you’re going to be building your own website then you should check out our Website Builder which is included free with all of our hosting plans. We have created a step by step set of instructions to show you how to quickly build your first website using our Website Builder.
It’s super easy to use and is based on some simple templates. It has loads of useful features like Maps, Contact Us form, SEO features, analytics, social media and even accepting online payments.
Once your order is placed your web hosting is activated instantly – there is no waiting around.
Once your hosting plan is set up you will receive a Welcome email with full instructions. These will include instructions to help you do the following:
- Full username and password for your web hosting control panel
- Full FTP details (username and password) so that you can publish your website – if you are using a web designer just pass them these details
- Webmail details so that you can access your emails from any internet connected device
- Instructions to set up email accounts
- Setup email accounts via Gmail
- Setup email accounts on your iPad
- Setup email accounts on your iPhone
Of course, if you have any problems whatsoever our technical support team is on hand 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to support you.
You may have purchased your domain name to redirect it to another domain name. This is called domain forwarding.
For example, maybe you have purchased the .co.uk and .com domains for your business. You want to use the .co.uk domain as the main domain name and you want to redirect the .com domain to the .co.uk. This is in case someone mistakenly types in the .com version of your domain so that they are still taken to your website.
You can achieve this by using what is known as domain parking. With domain parking you just ‘park’ the .com domain onto the .co.uk inside your hosting control panel.
Another thing you might want to do is to have several different websites. With our hosting plans you can actually do this to save money so that you don’t need to by individual hosting plans for every domain name.
Setting up an addon domain is really simple – you just login to your hosting control panel, select the Addon Domains option and enter the domain you want to use. You can have a complete website for that domain name and you can set up emails too.
Of course there are loads more things you can do, but this is just a brief overview. For more information, checkout the Pickaweb Knowledgebase or just click on the Live Help button and chat to our engineers.
We hope you have found this technote useful on what to do next when you have a domain name.
