Trusted by over 20,000 UK businesses
Pickaweb understood our problems from the get-go and recommended a package that would suit us as web designers. We had a VPS hosting server set up in no time and were helped through the entire process. We were offered free migration and had Brad pretty much on stand by whilst we were getting used to our new server
We’ve tested our virtual server with various speed testing tools and so far, it’s very quick indeed.
I would recommend Pickaweb and here’s why. It’s not because the server is fast or the response times are quick. It'’s because they listen to us and talk to us like humans. Simple, understandable, and helpful customer service… All we ever wanted.
I have been using Pickaweb for many years. I started off with simple shared hosting then ran a dedicated server with them for many years. I changed over to a virtual private server to reduce costs as I am not currently developing.
I am always pleasantly surprised with the support that I occasionally call upon. They are always helpful and get the job done with minimal fuss.
One of the very best UK vps providers about! I decided to look around for a UK-based hosting company following speed issues with my current provider. From day one I’ve found Pickaweb to be the fastest and just as importantly the most helpful hosting company I’ve ever dealt with.
Problems (generally my end) are dealt with quickly and efficiently I would recommend Pickaweb to anyone looking for fast, efficient and cheap virtual server, what more could you ask for?
Love the online chat!
I've been hosting with Pickaweb for a few years now. Have dealt with a couple of the pickaweb staff over their online chat, and they have never failed to fix any issues I may have.
Cracking company to get your hosting from.
One of our best providers - reliable services, and a very kind and efficient customer care

VPS stands for Virtual Private Server, also known as a Virtual Dedicated Server (VDS) and is a virtual machine as opposed to a physical dedicated server.
A virtual server is just like a normal server is used to host websites, but several ‘virtual’ servers can be hosted on the same physical server. It appears to the user as a dedicated server but is actually installed on a computer serving multiple Web sites. A single physical server can host several VPSs, each one with its own operating system (OS) that runs the hosting software for a particular user.
A virtual private server runs its own copy of an operating system, and customers have admin user access to that operating system instance, so they can install and use any software that runs on that operating system
A VPS server uses virtualization technology to split physical server hardware into several ‘virtual’ servers hosted on the same physical infrastructure.
Whereas in the past system administrators were traditionally confined to using one physical server for one purpose only, virtualization offers the flexibility to host several servers on one physical server. Each server can have it’s own purpose and it’s own distinct operating system.
This dramatically improves the level of flexibility available to system administrators in terms of the choice of software configuration they can run as well as providing significant advantages of scalability in terms of processing power, RAM and disk space and at a lower cost than using traditional dedicated physical hardware.
There are numerous advantages to our vps platform, the most important being performance, resilience, flexibility, fast set up, lower cost & lower energy use.Performance
Maybe you’re a reseller, a developer, a web designer or you run a growing company & you know that you need power, control, flexibility to grow & a low monthly cost with no long term tie in. If that’s you then VPS hosting is the perfect choice.
One of the major advantages over shared hosting is that you have much more freedom over key settings such as PHP & Apache than you would if you were sharing a server with other users.
The real beauty of a cloud infrastructure is that you can try it out & experience some serious performance without committing yourself to the higher costs & longer term contract that a high spec dedicated server that offers these features would involve.
We can even manage your virtual server for you if you aren’t comfortable with that type of thing & we’re here for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
In a word; anything.
Maybe you have just one website or eCommerce store & you just want to give it a more powerful platform to ensure you give your visitors the best experience possible.
Or maybe you need to run resource hungry applications that require a more exotic configuration than is offered with a shared hosting service.
Whatever your requirement you can be sure that our servers can handle it.
With a managed service we would run all the server maintenance for you, so you do not have to worry.
With an unmanaged server you would need to do upgrades yourself.
With our virtual private servers you are in complete control via your control panel. Just login, select the plan that has the resources you want & you can upgrade instantly.
No waiting, no downtime, just instant access to the resources you need.
If you are not technical then you can use our managed service which you can order at any time & for a low monthly fee we will take care of the technical aspects & perform upgrades, security patches, etc. for you.
If you have some technical skills & are able to use SSH & run some basic configuration tasks then you should not have any issues.
Most of our customers will use a control panel such as cPanel which comes with cPanel WHM interface. This is the industry standard, market leading control panel for managing Linux servers.
If you are using cPanel already & you wish to migrate then you can use the cpanel Migration feature.
If you are an existing Pickaweb customer using cPanel or if you are new customer & you are not confident with this type of thing then we do offer a free migration service as long as we can check the files in advance & they are within reasonable limits. Just contact our support team & we will check everything with you before migrating your files.
There are a number of differences between VPS (Virtual Private Servers) and dedicated servers. We will help you make an informed decision about whether to choose a VPS or a Dedicated Server.
Virtual Private Servers (VPS)
In recent years Virtual Private Servers, or VPS for short have become more popular than dedicated servers because they offer superior performance and more control than shared hosting whilst costing less than dedicated servers.
With VPS hosting, you share a number of physical resources such as disk space CPU and RAM on a physical server even though they are allocated specifically to you, but you still enjoy the freedom of having a private server, such as having your own control panel. This way, the overall CPU and memory are shared across all accounts on the machine, but at the same time portions of those resources are always dedicated to each account
So with a virtual server you have the power and control of a dedicated server but you have the added advantage of scalability too.
A Dedicated Server is a physical server that is reserved for your sole use. Whereas a virtual server shares hardware resources with other VPS instances, a Dedicated Server is completely isolated for your use only.
Its perfect for those who need the additional peace of mind that a secure servers brings as well as offering significant processing power for high resource demanding applications and websites. It ensures that third party activities do not affect your services.
Virtual Private Servers VS Dedicated Servers
When deciding which is the best web hosting package for you, it is important to weigh all the factors and then make the right choice for your business.
Flexibility And Scalability
Virtual Private Servers are extremely scalable with no downtime required to perform upgrades. Clients can self-provision their upgrade of hardware such as extra RAM, CPU or disk space.
On the other hand Dedicated servers do not scale the way a VPS can, especially a Cloud VPS which has huge potential for upward scaling. Dedicated servers are designed to provide a set amount of resources and the only realistic way of scaling their computing power is to add additional resources such as RAM modules or extra CPU units or even clustering the servers and balancing the load across multiple servers.
Also, it is worth noting that with a Dedicated Server you would need to over specify your requirements to take into account headroom for growth if you want to avoid downtime related to upgrades which would require an engineer to make the change.
Management And Reliability
In a Cloud VPS configuration a server is extremely reliable due to the fact that data is stored across several physical servers on the cloud.. In terms of cost this is the best option in terms of reliability and uptime.
To achieve similar reliability potential in a Dedicated Server would require additional hardware components namely additional hard drives, a RAID card to offer RAID capability and a dual power supply. This would require a physically larger, more powerful and ultimately more expensive server.
VPS are suitable for high traffic websites, small business owners, bloggers and everyone that needs the power of a dedicated server at a lower price.
If this type of server cannot satisfy your needs due to your security requirements then a dedicated server is the best solution for you.
Dedicated servers are more physically secure than VPS hosting due to the fact that you are the only client using that server. That does not negate the need to be vigilant and ensure that your server is protected and secure.
VPS are higher cost compared to shared hosting but less compared to dedicated servers. In terms of value for money a virtual private server offers a compelling business case when issues such as scalability and high availability are factored in.
Whilst there are several key differences between a Reseller plan and a VPS server it’s easy to understand why there is confusion between the two so we shall look to clarify the differences to help you better decide if it is appropriate for your needs.
Reseller plans are intended for any web designer, web developer or other web professional who want to sell hosting and act as their own hosting company.
A Reseller Plan is a low cost option which allows you to create separate hosting accounts for your clients and give them each a hosting control panel so that they can manage their own account and do everyday things like setup email accounts.
However, as the reseller is responsible for providing first line support to their clients. Also, with a Reseller account this is intended for websites that do not require a great deal of power. You also need to bear in mind that there is less flexibility in terms of the hosting configuration. Now for most people this won’t be an issue, but if you are running a particular application that requires non standard software or configuration then you may need to upgrade.
That’s where a VPS comes in.
If you need more power or flexibility then our UK VPS is the clear upgrade path. It offers you far more control in terms of the software configuration but also in terms of power and upgrading.
You are assigned dedicated resources such as CPU and RAM so any websites hosted on the server will perform much better than in the Reseller plan where key resources are shared across hundreds of other sites.
The most common VPS configurations are as follows.
Single Server VPS
This is a single physical server is split into several ‘virtual’ servers using a Virtualization software.
The advantage of this approach is that it is low cost to the hosting company as only one server is required to start offering virtual servers and only one licence is required. These savings can be passed on to the client so that the client has a cheap VPS option.
The downside of this approach is that everything is hosted on one server so there is the need to build redundancy into the server with dual CPU’s, Dual power supplies and hot swap hard drives configured in a RAID array. This may push the cost of the service up.
This approach does not offer any High Availability (HA) either as the server represents a single point of failure. What this means is that should the server experience a catastrophic issue which brings it down for any period of time then all clients on the server are affected.
Also this type of configuration is not suitable for live upgrades. For example, if more RAM is required this will require downtime to power down the server and add the extra RAM.
Virtual Private Servers can be managed or unmanaged. When it is managed, it means that the company in charge would do updates and upgrades of your server to make sure it is secure.
Multi Server (Cloud) VPS
A Multi Server (Cloud) VPS configuration avoids the single point of failure issues of a single server by pooling together the resources of several servers. The processing and data storage capacity of all of the servers in the cloud configuration offers a truly scalable and resilient infrastructure.
This type of configuration is more complex to set up than the single server option, but it offers both the hosting company and their clients some significant advantages:
Pickaweb offers the Multi Server (Cloud) VPS configuration on both our standard and (SSD based) Cloud SSD VPS. We do not offer single server VPS options.
What is really important to understand is that the Cloud VPS pools together the resources of numerous servers and can be scaled to dozens or hundreds of servers.
This means that data is spread across the cloud and processing power is shared. It is a very elegant and resilient solution. Because data is stored across several physical servers, the possibility of downtime or data loss are dramatically reduced. If one server fails completely the rest of the cloud continues working and the data is safe. Once the failed server is fixed it is brought back online and back into the server. The client will never notice any interruption in their service.
